It is really interesting that you're a role player, but you don't understand the gain of cosplay. It's much of the same--you're explaining a character that you would like to, & there are many features to cosplay that folks find appealing. Not every cosplayer will see every facet fun, typically...
There are those who enjoy planning and executing their costumes. It can takes an immense amount of skill to create a cosplay from scratch--from sketching out an idea to sewing the apparel, & practicing make-up to building props.
There are those who simply cosplay for fun, because they enjoy dressing up & being around others who are doing the same.
You will find those who like to be their characters--to act out and stay in-character with a group or for a competition. We recently attended a Steven Universe panel where all of the panelists were various characters from the show, but were also acting as these heroes would. It's like RP in real world.
This is the deadpool wade wilson cosplay costumes , and it is do one piece costume. Also you could see some great cosplay costumes from them. And all are custom made cosplay costumes
There are those who like the interest, admittedly. More popular cosplayers can in fact make a living from it, with con appearances and providing their photos.
There are probably many more, but these are the reasons why that I could collect. Being a side note, We also thought cosplay was lame at one time--until a pal of mine pressured me to dress up one year. Trying to find connected ever since.: )
